I have always believed that America’s children are the kite strings that keep our national ambitions aloft - the more we do today to spark their curiosity, their confidence, and their imaginations, the stronger our country will be tomorrow. The key to developing young learners into engaged, active, and innovative thinkers is instilling in them a love of reading at an early age. Reading is the gateway to countless skills and possibilities - it sets children on the path to a lifetime of discovery. On this Read Across America Day, we celebrate the parents, educators, librarians, and other champions of reading who help launch our Nation’s children on that critical path. Talk about reading, get excited about reading, and find joy in reading! The more you talk about reading, and help them see joy in reading, the more they will grow to love to read! So idea #4, talk about books while you work.Īs you celebrate Read Across America Day, bring in as much reading fun as you can. As we matched each picture, we discussed books that we love to read, some of our favorites, and we talked about going to the library. This idea is similar to #3, except for you want to get them talking about other books. Get them talking about reading! So, idea #3 retell stories as you work. Today, we read “Bunny’s Book Club,” then, as we practice cutting out pictures from the story, we retold the story, and added in our own fun. Preschoolers love to tell stories, especially if it’s a story they know and can add in their own fun. So, idea #2-Incorporate reading concepts into your learning. We practiced tracing the letters from left to right, naming the letters, and then we filled then in with beads. But, we talked about how when you read you go from left to right, top to bottom. He wanted to start by placing them in random order. His job was to place the beads on the letters. I wrote my sons name on a paper and gave him some beads.
